Honored for efforts to support persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities

BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) received the ‘Legislator of the Year’ award for his efforts on behalf of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The award was presented by the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council and The Arc of Massachusetts.

“I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition,” said Senator Moore. “I couldn't be more proud to advocate for the needs of the disability community. It was a joy being surrounded by colleagues, activists and friends who are committed to advancing public policies and funding for all persons with disabilities. We stand united behind this common cause.”

In particular, Senator Moore received this recognition for his support of legislation including a bill known as “Nicky’s Law” that would direct the Department of Developmental Services to establish a registry that identifies individuals who have been found to have committed abuse against persons with disabilities. With Senator Moore’s leadership, Nicky’s Law passed the Senate unanimously last spring and was re-filed during the current legislative session.

Through his role as Senate Chair of the Joint Committees on Public Safety and Homeland Security, and Higher Education, Senator Moore has also advocated for the passage of two other legislative priorities within the disability community including police training in autism, and the Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative that provides college education opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities.

“Senator Moore has a significant understanding of constituent priorities and always focuses on advocating for the needs of individuals and families,” announced The Arc. “He has been a true leader and friend of the disability community.”

Senator Moore received the award during the 41st annual legislative reception held at the State House. Hundreds of attendees gathered to celebrate Senator Moore before stopping by legislative offices to advocate for specific policy initiatives, and increased state funding to assist the disability community.
