Senator Moore Urges State Action to Ensure Student Protection
BOSTON – Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) released the following statement in response to last week’s announcement by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that federal guidance relative to the implementation of Title IX would be replaced:
“As a legislator, and as a father, last week’s announcement is deeply concerning to me. This abrupt change in direction shocked campus communities, sexual violence victims and prevention advocates across the country. It is incumbent upon the Commonwealth to fill the potential void created by a rollback of certain federal protections. There is more we can do to help prevent incidents of sexual assault on our college campuses. To that end, I have filed legislation that seeks to protect students, and to ensure that postsecondary institutions are implementing systems that students can trust. The bill would also codify a fair process for all parties involved. It is my sincere hope that this legislation, Senate Bill 2081, will arrive on the Governor’s desk during the current legislative session. The recent actions proposed at the federal level further amplify the need for state action.”
