Senator Appointed Acting Chair of Legislative Committee

BOSTON – With the recent departure of Senator James E. Timilty (D-Walpole) from the State Senate, Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) has been elevated from his role as Senate Vice-Chair to serve as Acting Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Homeland Security.  Senator Timilty had formerly served as the Senate Chair of the Joint Committee.

Moore, who has served twenty-two years in law enforcement, will join House Chair Representative Harold P. Naughton (D-Clinton) in leading the Joint Committee.  Thus far, Senator Moore has already presided over two Joint Committee hearings as Acting Senate Chair during the current legislative session.

“Given my background and professional experiences, I am particularly excited to have the opportunity to serve in this new role,” said Senator Moore.  “There are many important issues facing the safety and security of our Commonwealth.  I look forward to being able to take a more active role in the development of public policy in this area.”

"I've known Senator Moore since his years with the Environmental Police and consider him a friend and a leader in the field of Public Safety," said Representative Naughton. "I look forward to working with him for the benefit of all of the citizens of the Commonwealth."

Currently, 261 pieces of legislation are before the Joint Committee, including bills that would implement new restrictions on the operation of drones, and policy proposals relative to standardizing the missing persons search process.

This most recent leadership assignment is one of several for Senator Moore, who also serves as Senate Chair of the Joint Committees on Higher Education; Municipalities and Regional Government; and as Chair of the Senate Special Committee on Cyber Security Readiness.
