BOSTON – In an ongoing effort to assist with the relocation and rehabilitation of Stearns Tavern in the City of Worcester, Senator Michael O. Moore (D-Millbury) and Senate Majority Leader Harriette L. Chandler (D-Worcester) announced that $463,665 was included within an omnibus economic development bond bill to help bring the project to fruition.

Stearns Tavern, which is located off of Park Avenue, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest structures in the City. Last year, the Historical Commission and Preservation Worcester approved the relocation of the building to Mill Street at the site of the former Coes Knife factory. The decision for relocation was made to avoid demolition of the structure by the current property owner.

“This project represents a unified effort by local, state and federal partners to preserve a historic treasure in the City of Worcester,” said Senator Moore. “I am proud to have advocated for this funding and appreciate all of the hard work devoted to achieving this very positive result. Like many others in the community, I am looking forward to the project’s completion.”

“I am very pleased that the Senate passed such a substantial capital investment in the Stearns Tavern project,” said Senator Chandler. “It is a significant investment for Worcester and I really look forward to seeing how Stearns Tavern provides opportunities for individuals in conjunction with the Seven Hills Foundation.”

If approved for release by the Administration, the state funding will compliment federal Community Development Block Grant funds allocated for the project. Anticipated use of the building will include a variety of functions including a café operated by the Seven Hills Foundation.

The legislation will now go before a Conference Committee comprised of six legislators to resolve differences between versions of the bill passed by the Senate and House of Representatives.
