This amendment would bring the Environmental Police under the civil service exam standards that are used for other law enforcement agencies across the Commonwealth. The law enforcement exam has long been used for municipal police, and both the State Police and the MBTA police force have been added more recently. The reason for this change is centered around the needs of the Environmental Police and the citizens of the Commonwealth. Currently, aspiring Environmental Police Officers take a separate civil service exam that is not indicative of the current duties of the agency. Environmental Police officers are, first and foremost, law enforcement officers. Both their primary duties and their statutory authorities reflect this.
