This legislation allows for a field officer to request vessel registration paperwork and proof of identification from the boat owner. The officer could then verify the boat owners’ residential address. Currently, our state allows for an out of state registration to be used for up to sixty days in the Commonwealth. This causes enforcement problem for the officers in the field. Allowing field officers to check each boat owner will provide increased revenue through payment of vessel sales taxes as well as titling and registration fees. This legislation would also make it more difficult for stolen vessels to be used in the Commonwealth.
